Mirfield Stags suffered defeat for the first time this season, and bowed out of the Pennine League Cup, away at Illingworth on Saturday.
The Stags were making their third trip to face their Calderdale opponents in recent months, having earned comfortable wins in pre-season and league fixtures in 2019.
But their hosts produced an outstanding performance to end Mirfield’s 11-game unbeaten run that stretched back to September.
The visitors were bolstered by the addition of experienced half-back Scott Dyson (sponsored by Delta Electrical UK) and the return of prop forward Ben Mather (sponsored by Delta Electrical UK) for a second Stags spell.
But head coach Richard Silverwood saw his plans disrupted by the withdrawal of co-captain Wayne Jowett (sponsored by Spire uPVC Windows and Doors), due to illness, late into preparations.
The Stags were able to post scores through Dom Flanagan (sponsored by Charles Speight Architectural Design), Brad Delaney (sponsored by CJ Heating and Gas Specialists) and Lewis Holliday (sponsored by Delta Electrical UK), while Delaney added two goals.
However, Illingworth were worthy winners and they progress to the final four of the competition.
Mirfield will aim to bounce back when they return to Pennine League action on Saturday against Hanging Heaton.
