Mirfield Stags head coach Richard Silverwood admits the team are delighted to have booked their place in the Yorkshire Cup Final, but he insists that the focus remains on improving levels of performance, starting with Saturday’s match against Almondbury Spartans.
The Stags booked their place in the Final with victory over Doncaster Toll Bar on Saturday.
Silverwood said: “We’re obviously absolutely delighted to book our place in the Yorkshire Cup Final.
“What we have achieved so far has been outstanding and the work and togetherness we have just grows each week.
“To be unbeaten in all ten games we have played just shows what a good side we have.
“I can’t thank the players enough for the effort so far, as well as the sponsors – without them, we couldn’t run things as we do, so a massive thanks to them.”
But the Stags boss confirmed that the players’ priorities are with the task in hand, and on addressing weaknesses in recent performances.
“Before our big day we need to keep our feet on the ground and get the job done against Almondbury.
“We can’t afford to switch off and I am looking for a big performance to take into the final.
“Whilst we are unbeaten, I never let the lads get complacent and we will keep striving for better and better performances.
“In our last two games the second half has been sloppy and we need to address that.
“We know what we need to do and I am sure the lads will produce.”
Silverwood welcomes co-captain Wayne Jowett back into the side this weekend following a recent injury absence.
He said: “It will be great to have our captain back this week.
“We have missed his ball playing and calmness in the middle of the park, so having him back is massive for us.”
Due to the recent adverse weather, Saturday’s clash with Almondbury has been moved to the 3G pitch at Dewsbury Rams’ Tetley’s Stadium.
Silverwood added: “This week we are looking forward to playing on a fast pitch up at Dewsbury Rams.
“We have some very skilful players and playing on boggy wet pitches slows us down, so we are all really looking forward to this week.”
