Mirfield Stags head coach Richard Silverwood hailed improvement in the team’s defensive performance following Saturday’s win against Sharlston.

The Stags restricted their opponents to just four points, and racked up 20 of their own in tough conditions, to extend their winning start to the season.

Silverwood said: “In the past few weeks I have been challenging the team to be better defensively.

“That may seem odd when we only conceded one try last week, but there were still parts of that game where our contact and peel wasn’t as good as it should have been.

“But this week I would say it was our best defensive display of the season.

“They completed at 70% both halves, compared to our 62% and 42%, so we had to front up.”

Following the win against Sharlston, the Stags had been looking forward to returning to action in the Yorkshire Cup this Saturday.

But Siddal’s withdrawal from the competition likely means no fixture for Silverwood’s side.

He said: “We are disappointed to hear that this weekend’s big Yorkshire Cup Quarter Final against Siddal won’t be going ahead.

“This was set to be a massive week for the club and arguably our biggest test of the year so far.

“But, while the lads are likely to be able to rest up this weekend, focus now turns to the big local derby against Hanging Heaton, which is a match they have been waiting for since we started.”
