Mirfield Stags head coach Richard Silverwood says he was delighted by his team’s performance in victory at Illingworth on Saturday, but insists there is potential for further improvement.

Stags made it two wins from two with a 64-0 win against their opponents from Calderdale and will enjoy a break from action this weekend.

Silverwood said: “I was delighted with how we played at Illingworth, especially our defence.

“Against East Leeds we were sloppy at times, but we went over that in training and we spoke prior to game about what we wanted to achieve and they carried that out perfectly.

“We missed three tackles all game and they only made one line break, so that impressed me immensely.”

Following an unbeaten start for the new club, Silverwood is excited by what the future could hold.

“What excites me most is we have only had three games and just beaten a team 64-0 – and I still think we can improve further.

“We have a massive forward pack and played down the middle mostly at Illingworth, as we had a lot of success, but we have some classy backs too and I want us to mix up up.

“That will come for sure, but I thought our pack was outstanding, and in Casey Canterbury we have one classy individual at nine who controlled things perfectly.”

Stags will return to League action a week on Saturday, when they travel to face Almondbury, before hosting Upton.

Silvewood added: “The week off this week will do us good, freshen us up ready for a tough away game at Almondbury followed by another tough one against Upton.”
